Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Specialist treatments in St Albans

How can Shockwave Therapy help you?

Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment method utilised in the field of physiotherapy for the management of various musculoskeletal conditions. It works by directing high-energy sound waves - into injured tissues, stimulating the body's natural healing processes. This therapeutic modality is particularly beneficial for conditions that involve connective tissues, such as tendons and ligaments, and is commonly used to treat ailments like plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, and shoulder tendinitis, among others. The procedure involves a physiotherapist using a state-of-the-art device to deliver precise energy waves to promote recovery. The session typically lasts between 10 to 20 minutes. With its proven efficacy in pain reduction and improved mobility, Shockwave Therapy is a very valuable option in comprehensive physiotherapy care.

what client says about us

Ebrahim is a magician. 3 weeks before the London marathon I suffered with ITB syndrome and couldn’t run without excruciating knee pain. Ebrahim recommended a short course of shockwave therapy, I had 3 sessions over 3 weeks to escalate the healing process. I also had some accupuncture to relieve some of the pain. I was not confident that I was going to be able to run without any pain with so little time before the race. Ebrahim taped my leg up for the day and we had to hope for the best. I was adamant I was going to have to walk some of the race. Well, incredibly I ran all 42km with zero pain, the guy is a magician. Highly recommend for any sports injuries, he knows his stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our aim is to give excellent care, great customer service.

Shockwave therapy is often used to treat conditions like plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder tendinitis, Achilles tendinitis, and other chronic tendinopathies. It's also useful for scar tissue, osteoarthritis and more.

The sensation experienced during shockwave therapy can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some discomfort may be felt, however, it's tolerable and short term.

Common side effects may include minor discomfort and redness. Sometimes minor swelling immediately after treatment, but these effects typically resolve within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.

The number of treatments varies based on the specific condition and its severity. Typically, we carry out an initial of 4, up to a maximum of 6 treatments, usually performed on a weekly basis.

During a shockwave therapy session, a gel is applied to the treatment area, and the handpiece applicator is moved over the area, delivering the pulsed energy. Each session lasts approximately 10-20 minutes.

Some patients report immediate pain relief following therapy, but it can take 3-4 session for the effects to be felt.

In most cases, you can return to most normal activities almost immediately. However, it's recommended to avoid strenuous or high-impact activities for a few days following each treatment to allow the healing process to occur.

Coverage for shockwave therapy varies widely among insurance companies and plans. It's advisable to contact your insurance provider to check whether this treatment is covered under your plan.
