Bursitis can cause a joint to become painful and swollen. It is when the fluid-filled sacs (bursa) that cushion your joints become inflamed. Bursitis is mostly seen in the shoulder, elbow and hip but it can also happen in your knee, heel and other areas. Common symptoms of bursitis are pain, localised tenderness, limited motion, swelling and redness if the inflamed bursa is close to the surface of the skin.
Spending time in positions that put pressure on a specific part of your body (such as kneeling) can cause it too. Bursitis is also associated with other problems like arthritis, gout, tendonitis and diabetes.
Sometimes simple advice and exercise can help really settle this problem or at times an ultrasound scan is required to advise further treatment options such as: shockwave therapy/ steroid injection.
